VALENCIA AFTER THE FLOODING
Last week DANA Valencia floods
Last week Valencia suffered a heavy storm or “cold drop,” called DANA phenomenon caused devastating flooding and loss of life. During this DANA, Valencia experienced record-breaking rainfall, with up to 500 liters per square meter in some areas, causing flash floods and massive property damage. Roads were closed, industrial parks were inundated, and thousands were stranded or required rescue. The flooding tragically resulted in over 200 fatalities in Valencia suburbs alone, and emergency services have been stretched thin.
Regional and national authorities, as well as neighboring regions, have mobilized resources for rescue operations, with additional support coming from the European Union’s disaster response teams.
The Old Town, City of Arts and Science and beach and marina areas were virtually unaffected by last week's flooding.
Current situation – Valencia city fine to visit
The city center had very little rain and no flooding. I live in Valencia and the disaster pictures you've seen on the news were in other areas of the Valencia region.
The current situation is that metro is gradually operating this week, and if you go to the city today you wouldn't know anything had happened. Right now, in the southern city suburbs where some of the worst flooding occurred, there was very little rain and the problems were mainly caused by flash floods, from rain runoff in surrounding areas.
Although the city is not in the best shape, our hearts go out to all those in the affected areas, many of whom are still clearing up the mess. And of course, our thoughts are with all those that lost their lives. There were far too many and questions will be raised about the governments' emergency alert and response systems.
Traveling around the region outside the city is still being discouraged, as some motorways remain closed and longer distance trains are not operating. However, Valencia airport remains fully functional; tourist attractions, hotels, bars and restaurants are open; taxis are plentiful and public transport services are gradually being restored.
Valencia city and me as a Valencian citizen, we are open for business and ready to welcome you for and by visiting you will be supporting the wider region in its recovery from this natural disaster.
